Towing with 17" vs 20"
 
Was just curious why I hear of 1500 Ram owners using the 17" rims and tires instead of 20" rims and tires. Is it because the 10 ply tires are too big on the 20" and will rub? How is towing recreation boats less than 4000 lb with the 20" tires?

It's because 10 ply or E rated tires are hard to find in a 20" size and the sidewall has to be so tall that they don't fit.

I haven't tried towing a small boat with 20's on this rig but I did with another one with 20's and had no problem.

Motor Trend had an interesting article about the 2009 with a blurb on the towing issue being discussed. Here is a link to the article:

You do realize these are not "10" ply tires correct? I see this all the time and hear tire store tell people about 10 ply tires....there is no such thing as a "10" ply passenger car or light truck tire. This is an old term from the days of bias ply tires..with today's radial tires they are mostly 2 ply, with some 3 ply exceptions. So just understand that "10" ply is NOT 10 ply..it is just an old rating used from the days of bias ply tires. Unfortunately tire store salesman throw the term around and confuse many consumers.
MADDOG is dead on about "E" rated. That is about the highest rating you can get in a Light truck radial tire..they are found stock on 2500 and 3500 trucks.

I tow a 6,500lb trailer with no issues with 20's...I can't imagine you will have any problems at all.

Just to let you guys know i used to have a set of 275/55/22 on a ford f150 the were e rated i held around 2500lbs in the bed and sometimes i used to tow around 12k lbs the tires were pirelli scorpion str the tire held up great but the brakes and suspension needed modding

OK, now I'm confused. I took a look at the article you linked to and did see the double asterisks, specifically the comment that you would have to deduct 1100-1150 lbs for 20" wheels, off of max towing.

What is confusing me, is that a while back I came across a post that had a link to a very handy pdf (rammlup1500.pdf) titled "2010 Ram Base Weights/GCW/Payload/Trailer Tow 1500" - sorry I didn't find / provide the link or original post as a reference.
But in that pdf, I looked for my truck specifics to see what my towing limitations are, and for a Crew Cab 1500 4x4 SLT (they didn't list Sport - just ST, SLT, and Laramie) they listed several different combinations (tires, engine, gears).
And what they had listed for mine, P275/60R20, Hemi, and 3.92 gears, was a max trailer of 9900 lbs, and payload of 1380 lbs (and a base weight of 5393).
By comparison, for the same vehicle, but with P265/70R17, there was only a 50 and 40 lb difference...9950 / 1420 (and a base weight of 5351).
They also had another tire option, LT275/70R17C - which had the same numbers as myine with 20's...

So I'm wondering what numbers I should be using when looking to stay under for towing safely? The 9900 - or 1100 off of that?
And if the wheel size effects your max towing, would it also lower the payload capacity?

I only ask because I'm looking to buy a new RV (possibly a short & lightweight 5th wheel), and I am using these numbers to narrow my search options...

A quick google search found that PDF you were referring to (http://www.dodge.com/bodybuilder/201...ammlup1500.pdf).

After reading it and looking a the specs....I would put more faith in what the PDF says vs. what the article I posted states.

I have a 2009 Hemi 5.7L 4x4 SLT w/17"ers and I tow a Coachman Catalina 34' with no problem at all. Here are the weight specs on my camper:

WEIGHTS
Base Weight 6,512 lbs.
Carrying Capacity 2,988 lbs.
GVWR 9,500 lbs.
Hitch Weight 810 lbs.

I have the 20's wrapped in 35" Pro Comps and pull a 24' Cuddy cabin boat with a 454 in the back with no problems. I just dont let it click over into 5th gear to help the tranny out

Holly crap man my grand parents have a 30' just like yours and I wouldn't dream of putting it behind my truck even with the load level hitch lol good to know its possible I bet you get no mileage though
