Gear ratios: how much difference do they make in the 1/4 mile?

Just wondering how much of a difference there is in 1/4 mile and 0-60 times, when compairing 3:55 gears to 3:92 ?

I bought my 09 used, and I would have preffered to have the 3:92 in my truck, but I couldn't find one that had all the other options I wanted for the price I wanted, so I settled for the 3:55.

I know people say the 3:92 feels better, but I'm wondering if anyone has seen any real world side by side compairisons of what the same truck will run with the different gears? ....and how much difference is there REALLY in something like a full 1/4 mile race??

4.56's is what ive heard are the best for our trucks for 1/4 mile. Being heavy we need huge gears to push all that weight down the track.

Id have to agree with RT, and you being a 4 by 4 you might want to do a slightly taller tires down the road, and the 4.56 will definitely be a plus, either way its a win win. I have 4.10 gears stock and I achieve the steeper rear by swapping out the 33" oem tires to 29" which gives me approx. 4.56 or so. Stock 33" tires Im buzzing around 2000rpms at 70mph on top gear. With my 29" tires Im buzzing around 2250rpms at 70mph so its not ridiculous by any means but the benefit is great. Heres a calculator that I fool around with, maybe it could help, maybe not. If I was in this position, if I was planning to stay with 33" oem tires at the minimum and possibly going larger in the future Id go with the 4.56 but if I was planning to stick with stock tires..then you can always get shorter tires in the future for occasional racing Id go with the 4.10 IMHOhttp://www.richmondgear.com/dragcalculators.html

Strictly speaking 3.55 vs 3.92. The 3.92s will give you much improved off the line performance because they are limited slip whereas the 3.55s are only launching using 1 wheel.

Other than that, I'll leave it to those that race their trucks.

That's not entirely true...my 3.55's have a lsd.

To the OP...I don't have any first hand experience, but from what I've read, going from 3.55's to 4.56 will be good for about .2 sec.

Jeez, I hope my 3:55 truck isn't a one wheel wonder! ...Need to check into that!

Pretty easy to tell....go out and punch the long peddle and count the black stripes on the road. If there is one, it's a peg leg...two means LSD.

My 3.92 does not have LSD

You must wear that tire out just thinking about the gas peddle.

OK, next dumb question:

-If my 3:55 geared truck does NOT have LSD, and I put 3:92 or 4:10 gears in ...will I still NOT have LSD???

What determines whether or not you have limited slip anyway?
