Oil loss between changes

Are you aware of any issues with the Ram burning engine oil between changes? I changed the oil on 12/31 and there was just under 5 quarts of oil drained. I put 6 quarts in when I previously changed it.
Thanks

Oil consumption with the 4.7 isn't a common problem. Any visible leaks?

I am not familiar with the 4.7L Dodge engines, does the oil filter hang down or stick almost straight out ?
I know when i change oil on engines where the filter hangs almost straight down, i put oil into the filter before screwing it onto the engine, that usually takes a good part of a quart, then i pour the rest of the recommended amount into the oil fill hole, then check the dip stick to see where the oil level is, then check it once again after i have started it for a just a bit.

The filter on the 4.7 is front mounted, forward facing and sits at about a 45 degree angle. Filter capacity is roughly 1/2 quart and maybe another 1/4 quart will be lost while removing the filter.

There are no visible leaks.

Let's do a bit of math here and see what we can come up with. Total capacity for the 4.7 is 6 quarts with a filter change. If you account for 1/2 a quart that you can't drain from the filter, that leaves you 5 1/2. Figure another 1/4 that will be spilled when removing the filter - 5 1/4 are now left. Since you didn't specify how much below 5 quarts was measured, I'm going to guesstimate 4 3/4 for the sake of argument. That would mean that 1/2 quart was consumed by the engine. You didn't mention how long you had went between changes or what brand/weight of oil you're using but Chrysler says that up to one quart within 3,000 miles is acceptable useage.

I emptied the filter into the oil pan prior to diposing of it. It was last changed on 12/31 with 6 quarts of Valvoline full synthetic 5w20 oil which was just shy of 3000 miles from the last time on 9/10 with the same oil.

Does this impact the Chrysler standard of a quart loss over 3000 miles?

Even draining the filter won't get the majority of what's trapped in the filter media itself but assuming you got half of it, that's still within what Chrysler calls normal. I'd be tempted to try a different brand (same weight though) at the next service interval and track the results. I personally recommend Mobil 1 synthetic. I run it in my 3.7 which is essentially the same engine and I use less than 1/2 quart in 5000 miles.

if you are living where there is a Walmart
Mobile 1 is sold there in 5 quart containers for about $22 & then i go to a parts store for a WIX oil filter
i try to save a bit on the oil, so i can get a quality oil filter, i'm on a budget

Ok. Thanks .... On that note, how often do you change your oil? 3000 or 6000 miles. I have heard different opinions on this practice.
