Swapping rims from 20's to 17's

Our new 2011 ram 1500 crewcab 4x4 came with 20 inch wheels on it.
I would like to get some other rims for winter tire use.
I was hoping to get 17 inch ones for it.
Any issues clearing the brakes with 17's?
What are decent quality 17's , that are not priced too high.
I prefer strength over looks.

we will use the winter tire/ rims in winter, and the stock 20's that have all season tires on them in the summer.
Thanks

Rams come std. with both 20's & 17's so there shouldn't be any brake clearance issues. I would imagine 17" steelies would be pretty cheap. They some std. on the SL's. Your best bet may be to find someone who has an SL that is looking to upgrade (to 20's or just nicer 17/18's) I'd try Craig's List and eBay as well as the For Sale forum here on the Z. Good luck!

I would go with 18s because if you ever lift the truck you may have clearance issues with 17s.

Thanks guys.
I learn a lot here, I was not aware they came with 17's or 20's.
Our new truck just came with 20's and after i priced 4 new stock rims for the winters, i nearly had a heart attack.
So want steel 17's.

I changed my stock 20's in Nov. The 17" steel work just fine. No issue's with brake clearance. These trucks all have the same brakes whether they have 17" or 20" stock rims. I went with 265/70R17, Yokohama Geolander, 4 OEM steel rims. So far i'm happy with them. Your speedo will be off a bit due to the smaller diameter tire.

I considered it being off, so will use my GPS to see how far off at say 50, 70, 90, and 110 kms/hr.
Stock its close, usually just 1 or 2 kms/hr off what the GPS says.

My portable GPS showed the same on the 20's, 1 - 2 km/hr off. I haven't checked the 17's yet. I guess I should. I keep forgetting because I have the NAV radio.

Local CL always have ads of folks selling their 17" steel spare rims pretty cheap.

This is true ^^^

Although quite often I see the 17" steelies listed for the same price as the dang 20" aluminums!

I'm curious what the overall height difference would be between factory 20" and factory 17". Also, is this ok to do on 4x4.
