Do I need head studs?

If I get a tuner to increase power do I need to get head studs?

You shouldnt unless you start upgrading turbos with higher boost levels. Anytime you add a programmer, you take a chance. I have the smarty jr and they claim the hp increase is "safe" for our trucks.

You're a long way from needing head studs. Who told you that fairy tale?

so if I get the Smarty tuner I could run software #9 on it and as long as I don't have a DPF to overheat then I'm good?

RamTech 01-26-2011 01:55 PM

I'm not familiar with that particular tuner, but I've never seen just a tuner crank up a CTD to the point that internal modes were needed. Are you going to do the DPF and EGR delete?

StevanA 01-26-2011 03:40 PM

yeah I plan on it! On the MADS electronics website the only thing they say about their 170hp tune is that if you make passes of 105 mph or higher that exhaust heat could be high enough to damage the DPF, but if I don't have a DPF then is it ok to run that tune?

RamTech 01-26-2011 03:42 PM

I would think so but you should e-mail them with that particular question.

The weak link will be the transmission for any tune over 100hp if its an automatic. I have heard of guys running a 170hp tune without issue and guys running a 100hp tune and had trans trouble. Your driving habits will have the biggest effect on parts failing.

auto or manual? i would buy a h&s tuner. on a 6.7 you have to do the dpf delete and if you do go smarty its not just putting it on 9 and you have that much power each truck is different it will take a lot of tunning with a smarty

As has been said, the weak part is gonna be the trans if it's an auto.. While head studs SOUND cool, they are really not needed until you get to the crazy high power setups and twin turbos.
