New guy wanting to purchase his first truck!
Ok like the title sais im wanting to buy my first truck. Right now im trying to trade in my 07 zx6r sportbike for this 1999 dodge ram 4x4 5.2l quad cab. The exterior has expected scratches and such but the interior is like new. So when i test drove it belt squeeled and the power seemed to hesistate, it wasnt a bad hesistation like it has a leak anywhere just seemed like the engine had no nuts. So I would just like to know what common problems do these trucks have and if this is a good deal on a first good truck. I will be driving this to ca>Fl in a month too haha. Heres the link, any help is appreciated thanks.

the most major problem you will hear from just about anybody with a 2nd gen ram is a poor trans. personally been thru 6 differnt trans, 4 on my 99 sport quad cab short, and my current 00 silver quad cab short is on its second. as for it being a tad on the nutless side, dont worry too much. a cai mixed with a throttle body spacer will tighten up throttle responce and help to waken up the 318, ive done it to mine. as for a good first truck, go for it, there real easy to work on

Ok,i just want this to be a good far as the transmission goes is that with you doing alot of off road or commuting? How are these engines also, pretty reliable at 113k? Thanks!

Yea it may feel laggy to you but thats just how must trucks drive especially the smaller v8s (4.7 and 318/5.2) and v6s. But a cai,cat back,tb and programmer wont set you back much and will wake up your truck and have you out running many a car

yeah u guys are prob right, im so use to sport cars and I drove my buddies 03 4.7 ram with exhause, cai and programmer and it feels nice. I just hope if I can finance this one it will be somewhat the same. Just waiting on them to give me a price on my bike.

Another question is what should i look for on the truck? I test drove a f150 that i like but once i drove it all i heard what the rearend whining like crazy, does the dodge rams diff's pretty stout? I gotta take this beast 2500mi across the us in a month.

No real chronic problems with the rear diffs as long at the maintenance program is kept up.

The front suspension trackbar is the only part I would be looking real hard at.

How much do the transmissions usually run?

i replaced one at right around 1,900$ full rebuild. it went out at 126k, and few times after that too cause i borrowed it to someone (absolutly retarded) while i was deployed and he ran the wrong tranny fluid in it. he paid for that one so w/e right? ha. anyways as long as you maintain it, it will be fine. the trans is kinda the cancer of this gen ram, but with a solid rest of a truck, it does the trick. my current is at 246k on the original 318. love that motor!
