Help me choose a diff gear to buy
Hello everyone, I am considering the purchase of a new dodge diesel.
It will be either a 2500 or 3500 single rear wheel truck, and with a diesel, and manual tranny, as i HATE automatics.
It will be used for everything, from errand runner with no load, to carrying a good pile of weight in the box sometimes, to towing any one of my several trailers that vary from a low of 4500 pounds, up 11,000 pounds.
It will spend a fair bit of time on the highway, at speeds around 90 to 110 kms/hr. ( thats about 55 MPH to 70 MPH) my question is what diff gearing is best for this use.
I want to get decent mileage when cruising the HWY unloaded, but not so tall it struggles too much when towing a load up a mountain pass.

well sorry i dissagree. i have an 02 with 4.10 and our pulling truck has 4.10... ahggg. the sweet spot for milageis 1800-2100 rpm cummins really doesnt make power after that , even my pullin truck the dyno chart starts to fall rapidly after that... but wheel speed is the key aso there.. they make the torque i as 3.73 or even heck 3.42 thats trully what im thinking in throwing in the 02 i drive dayly. DO NOT GO WITH 4.10 u will lose 3 to 4 mpg. Sorry if i pissed anyone off but its FACT!!!!!!!

With the signatures u guys have that have asked the ??? and have answered remember the cummins is throwing down 2 times the torgue u r...And doesnt turn the RPM those motors do either.. JUST MY 2 CENTS

I would opt for the 3:73's , I have those in my 09 and they are an all around good gear when pulling your trailers or on the highway.

Thanks for all the replies.
I know the 3.42 gears are stock, just wondered if i should stick with them or go for a higher ratio.
I do not want to ruin the fuel mileage, but also do not want it to struggle too much when towing, despite its being a light trailer for a diesel really.

I don't know where you're getting your info, Mcbride but the 2011 model 2500/3500 isn't offered with a 3.42 regardless of which engine you choose. Available ratios (depending on which rear axle and truck) are 3.73, 4.10, 4.44, 4.56, or 4.88. If you're pulling 11k up a mountain pass, the 3.73 isn't going to be the best choice. If you primarily tow in flat land, it would be ok and you would see better economy.

3.73s and a dpf delete and you'll see plenty of power and good fuel mileage

I agree 100%. I've done it and get 20+ mpg with unbelievable power. Don't forget, you will need a tuner with the dpf delete.
