Tranny Shifting Problem
Hi Guys

Wondering if you could help me with the problem I have been having. Hopefully I can explain.

So the main problem is my truck is not holding 2nd gear. when climbing a hill at low speed it will hold till about 2000rpm then want to drop back to 1st.
when back in first it will rev out and not change up until I take my foot off the gas. then it will change down. this keeps happening till I can get it about about 70/80km/h then its will slip into 3rd.

I live in Alberta, Canada in cold temperatures but this happens when the truck is cold and warm. It is a problem when I'm driving lots of steep windy roads.

the truck has done just over 150,000Kms

It is also slow to change gears and one cold morning it took a long time on the highway to change into overdrive but I have not had that problem since. As far as I know it has a new transfer case too. I dont have huge tires or lift kit.

Any help would be awesome. thanks in advance!

This could be a mis-adjusted throttle valve cable that controls the trans shift pressure. Here is a link to the service manual information on how to adjust the Throttle valve cable on the 2001 Ram.

Thanks for your help. I have printed off the instructions and will get a friend to give me a hand with the adjustment soon. Hopefully it sorts out the problem.

I'll post the results when I do.

Cheers for your advice!

When's the last time it was serviced and had a band adjustment?

Not sure. I bought the truck in December and had an oil change last month but thats it. Got new spark plugs and sepentine belt I have to put in.

Why do you ask? Is a band adjustment common when serviced or do you have to ask for it to be done?

You'll probably have to request it. Considering it's year, having the trans serviced would be a prudent thing to do, unless it's been serviced recently. I believe it is recommended every 60K miles (100K km). Check with your dealer, and ask for a estimate to have it serviced so you don't get hit with an 'unexpected' bill. Trans service is quite a bit more expensive than a basic oil change, but is generally well worth the investment.

Rang around and got a few quotes. anywhere from $200 to $350. $350 gets you a full flush and wash!

I will book it in to get done soon, no idea when it was serviced last so its probably a good idea to have it done.

Keep us posted as your experience/results. It can be difficult at time to try to diagnose a problem without actually seeing/touching/ know what I mean. :) So am always very interested in the final results.
