Blown Header Gaskets
I believe I bought a 1997 Dodge RAM 1500 with blown header gaskets. Hopefully the problem isn't any worse than that. I took it to a mechanic he popped the hood and listened for a second and immediately said its blown header gaskets. (It makes a slight ticking noise and seemed to be worse during the cold weather.) I had a friend look and he said its an exhaust leak then the mechanic said its blown header gaskets.
I want to get the problem fixed however want to avoid getting ripped off again.
How much are new header gaskets and typically how much is it for a mechanic to fix?
Thanks for any help or suggestions.
Welcome to the forum.
Header gaskets, such as those offered by Summit Racing, run anywhere between $20 to $40 depending on material. Get a good set.
Also, get a set of Stage 8 fasteners. Most gasket blowouts are caused by header bolts backing out and loosening the seal between the header, gasket and exhaust ports. Stage 8 fasteners will not back out until you want to take them out.
This is probably a 3-4 hour job for a qualified mechanic at whatever rate the shop charges.
