2500 06 trans not engaging

All, can you give me some advice, just bought a 2006 2500 with the Cummins 5.9. Twice now since I bought the truck the Transmission when shifting to drive has not engaged. I put it back into park and then it shifts just fine. Is the there a safety mechanism that prevents shifting if I try to shift it too quickly? Or could I be looking at why the guy traded it in the 1st place? Any thoughts would be helpful.

Hi Gary, not exactly sure here, but do you have your foot firmly on the break when shifting? I know most vehicles have had a break interlock that requires the brake to be engaged before shifiting out of park. If the answer is yes then by pressing the break down when you shift into or out of park the second time is it engaging easier. I would look at the interlock system. There might be a warn component there.

Anyone else want to chime in?

I hope it's the interlock vs. the transmission pump. How many miles on the truck???

It had 99135 when I got it, I have put about 400 miles on it already. am not sure about my foot on brake all the way, I thought I did but didn't pay much attention, I will watch to make sure form now on. Thanks for the Help, Gary

Since you just purchased the truck, you likely do not know when it was last serviced, right? I suggest that you take it in for a transmission service. The oil needs to be changed periodically and the trans bands need to be adjusted.

I bought the same truck last march. after driving it about 1000 miles, I had the same thing happen. Since getting it serviced I have put another 5000 miles on it with no further problems to date.

Wishing good luck to both of us!
