Vent control knob

I can't figure out what the dots are between each setting on the vent control knob. Anybody know? I hate when I don't know the purpose of something...

That is just to do changes in steps. Sort of like a MPH Gauge, you have it say 10 then 20 then 30 and their is a line between each one to mean 15 25 35 and so on. Similar to that

well that's all fine and dandy lol but why did they make it so it "clicks" into place at each dot? as if it were selected.... so when its "clicked" into a dot position its like "neutral" for the vent?

They make it click so it stays into place which position you select I mean of course. Also so you know that it is clicked into place. Dodge is known for using crap plastic knobs so something on vent knobs you turn then but they break and you don't know if it is open or closed. LOL I remember that with my other ram

im confused lol... I understand it clicks into place at each setting, for example at the defroster setting, or floor setting, but why did they make it so there is an extra place holder in between each setting? whatever lol, it just seems odd that it would click into place where it does nothing.
