Factory Backup Cam or Aftermarket?

My 2011 Sport CC 1500 did not come with the factory backup cam as I had originally wanted and now I need to get that installed myself somehow. I can purchase the Mopar backup cam kit which replaces the tailgate handle with the one that has the camera in it or I can purchase an aftermarket camera that is either drilled into the existing tailgate latch or purchase one that is integrated with the license plate frame.

For anyone in my situation earlier, what did you do? Factory or aftermarket? I want to use the same headunit that came with the truck. Thanks!

I do not know about the aftermarket ones, but I do like the factory one. I was really surprised with the field of view from the lens. My $0.02.

Depends, I like the factory look fit and finish so mopar would be the way to go for that. Aftermarket will be cheeper to install and might even offer more features.

Just my take, but I like the Mopar one as well. The aftermarket may be less expensive, but the install may be similar on both. For the little extra, I would go with a stock unit.

Get the factory unit, I love my backup cam!

How much is the factory set up with and without install? Is it a DYI project?

The factory unit is about $300 for the entire thing - camera in new tailgate handle, and wiring harness all the way to the headunit. I'm not looking to do this myself so I'd need to pay someone for their time. Dealer wants $105 per hour to do it and they say it'll take anywhere from 3-5 hours. A local car stereo installer could do it for $150 total. I was just curious as to what people thought of their factory camera. Some have complained that they can't see when it's bright outside.

I had an aftermarket on my last Ram and the factory unit on my 2011. To me, there's no comparison. The factory unit wins hands down.

Pickup an aftermarket camera like the Audiovox CMOS2, get a lockpick to interface with your factory Mygig and your good to go. That's what I did and it works great. The camera cost me $70 and the lockpick $179 both from Ebay. Here are some pics of my rear camera install.

I have a 2011 dodge ram 1500 sport and it did not come with the back up cam I installed the factory mopar unit in under 2 hours! however you will have to have the dealer activate it they charged my $65 to do activate it! if you have them install it it only takes 1.5 hours for them to install it it says so right on the directions that come with the kit! I also have the 430n radio with the code RHB on the radio they say it does not work with my radio but it does!!!
