Lockpick CHR550 Review

I just finished installing the Lockpick CHR550 to my 430 (RBZ) radio. This is the version that has a dedicated ipod in cable that syncs with your ipod/iphone to allow video and audio through. I tested both the ipod out and the ipod manual modes tonight. I must say I'm impressed and that it works as advertised.

The results are amazing! I added an aftermarket camera (CMOS2) and hooked it up as well. The backup camera works great and the ipod is working just like in the demo video. It's nice to have access to all my playlists, audio books, genius playlists, podcasts (and more) from the factory radio. The physical install took longer than I expected but it was more tedious than anything else. I took a long time making sure I routed cables correctly as well as using zip ties to hold everything in place.

I would recommend this product to anyone who is trying to get functionality from their ipod with the factory radio. The next test will be to see how durable it is and how long it lasts.

 I just purchased this last Thursday. Can't wait to get it in.
Where did you route the Ipod connection and the USB connection? I have looked and I am thinking about putting the USB in the top glovebox where the factory one is. As for the Ipod I noticed that the front tray in center console has a hole in the front dash trim that I need to take off to get to the radio. I am thinking of putting it through this existing hole and my ipod will stay in the front tray.:thk:

I had the same thoughts as you did about the ipod cable and usb cable. I decided to put both in the upper glove box. I ran them both through the hole in the upper left corner (some sort of sensor thing is there already). There was plenty of space and I didn't have to modify/cut anything on the truck.

I went with the glove box since I want to keep my ipod out of sight for when I park downtown. That 7' cable really goes a long way though!

Any Pics?
How was it to take of the center dash?
I need to find something that shows where the screws are located and where to pull not to break any clips.

Thanks for the reply!

This is the thread I used which gives a really good breakdown of how to get the dash apart.

So how do you fellows like the CHR550 after a couple months of usage? I've noticed that Coastal has provided some software updates. Any updates?

Rough 01 08-19-2012 02:27 PM

There haven't been any updates for the CHR550 since 5/19/11. I've had mine for over a year now and it still work well. It has some things I wish worked better but overall it was a good investment.

Thanks for the reply ROUGH 01,
You are correct I seen the July update, however, that was for the C8 model.

Are you using it with the Factory Backup Camera? If so, hows the functionality of the camera?

Rough 01 08-19-2012 03:53 PM

I'm not using the factory camera. I'm using an aftermarket camera. I started with a CMOS2 5-in-1 backup camera (http://www.amazon.com/Audiovox-5-In-.../dp/B001TE1NBG).

That camera developed a crack in the glass covering the lens which allows water and dust to accumulate inside the housing. I was living with it for about 5 months and just replaced the camera today with a Shark SHK5199 Waterproof Rear View Night Vision Camera (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...ls_o00_s00_i00).

I'll let you know how it lasts but it appears to be working fine and it fits in exactly the same place as the factory camera is on the tailgate handle. I hope this one holds up better than the last one.

Hope that helps
