2011 Laramie 1500 Towing

I have a quick question. I am looking to tow a GVWR 8400 lb TT across mid country. I traded my 09 2500hd for the 1500 with towing package. Will this truck do it? I have added the airlift kit to the rear coils as well as some mods. I know the truck will pull but will it be stable or safe. Sorry for being so short but this is the third time I had type this before the browser froze up. I will be doing a lot of uphill and downhill towing. Do I need to upgrade the oem brakes? Any insights will be greatly appreciated.

What rear gears do you have? What is your tongue weight?

I suspect that you will have 3.55 gears and these will reduce your towing capacity. Also, depending on your tongue weight, you may need a Class IV hitch.

Lastly, the load rating on your tires may not be sufficient.

A load leveling device and an anti-sway hitch are also highly recommended.

The OEM brakes should be fine as long as you are in Tow/Haul transmission mode.

I have 3.92 gear and a class IV hitch. I also have the sway bar as well as stabilizer bars. If you think the oem brakes will be fine then I will just hook and go. Thanks for such a rapid response.

I think you should have opted for a diesel. Would you PLEASE post your proposed route so that I can stay out of your way.

You should have no problems but I would double check the trailer brakes and the brake controller before you leave and then triple check them before the Rockies.

Great advice so far, and I assume you have a trailer brake controller. You will also want to monitor your transmission temps. Mag Hytec makes a extra capacity transmission pan and differential cover with cooling fins. I would recommend these. I know a couple guys towing over 8K have mentioned heat build up in the transmission and rear diff when there were hills involved. The Mag Hytec stuff eliminated heat issues for them.

I will post a link to the thread if I can find it.
