What kind of Cam and Gears should i get

im getting ready to do a Cam swap and put new gears in my truck. Ive heard the crazy spartan is a good cam but want to get more opinions. Also, im wanting to put 4.56 gears in my truck since alot of people rave about it and i have the 22" srt-10 rims on my truck. any suggestions and also good places to buy these things would be much appreciated.

4.56's for sure.
05 has very good tuning options vs other years so you have a nice array of cam choices to choose from.

have any suggestions on what i need to look for cam wise? Im pretty much a retard when it comes to the more technical side of engines and stuff....i tried looking at cams but it kinda just looks like gibberish to me....i know that my truck is a pig in first and part of 2nd...but seems to really put it on at the end of second thru 4th gears

My state of mind is mostly based on cams that work good on RC's so i am not really familiar on what would work best on QC's.

chefred112 as the real world experiences and numbers to really answer your questions so hopefully he will pop in here.

your on the right track with the crazy spartan....in our case (qc's), we need a tq cam to get us movin from the gitgo. So the question is, what kind of complimenting mods are you going to do..that will dictate how mild or aggressive you can cam. You mentioned gears (4.56's)...how about tq verter, plan on keeping that stock? and tuning? canned only or do you think you'll custom tune it? you can then get a more aggressive lsa for it. but you have plenty of choices..crazy jay, crazy spartan, comp 260, sidewinder...

well...thats what im trying to figure out...i know i want a cam...i know i want gears...i know i want LT headers.....but other than that..im kinda clueless...havent read much about the tq converter and what i could do with that....im planning on getting a tune(s) from hemifever once i get it done.. and what is an lsa?

i mostly drive this around town, no highway miles and if so its usually like 5 to 10 miles on highway and maybe a jaunt to orlando or daytona beach (150 to 200 miles) once every 3 to 6 months.....so im guessing im looking for a more "out of the gate" performance...maybe take it to the local speedway and do some 1/4 mile runs.. the more help you can give..the better cause i want to do it right the first time and in one shot and not piece it together. Thanks

lsa = lobe seperation angle. I think the 4th gens come with a 117 lsa cam and I have no clue about the 3rd gens. cams with a smaller lsa become more radical and slightly harder to tune, your hp/tq curve is steeper but you'll get more in the upper rpms...bigger peak numbers!

I'd imagine you'd want to look for something around 113 degrees plus/minus 1 degree.

agree with chevyk...about 113 is good and aggressive (mine is)... 114 is pcm friendly but if your having Sean do your tuning..113 is good... get it to sound like this..

sounds good....probably even better in person...what kind of exhaust do you have on that?

ok...so when looking for cams i have to look for lsa 113...got it....now i was searching around....was seeing good things about the krc210x cam....but it may be too aggressive? and i guess different grinds can be had...i see lsa 104+4 and lsa 108+4? ugh..i love learning about new stuff...but i hate it cause i feel like a retard when im asking on the sites...lol

also....any specific likes on torque conv. brands? i found this one? but again, the numbers elude me on to what i want..

dont know if i can post links....if not..im sorry...newb mistakes.....

also....i have the "hemi tick" unfortunately and my 05 only has 39k miles on it (yes...very lightly used truck, i was fortunate to get it) .....and well..it makes it sounds like a Sh*T heap....so with replacing the cam...and the kit that comes with it....(springs,rockers,etc) would that possibly fix that, or would i need to maybe buy something else...id figure having the cam out and/or possibly the heads off would be the best time to address that problem.

CHVYKLR 07-08-2011 08:11 AM

for torque converters I would talk to Edge (Andre) or circle-d.

the "HEMI tick" is just that and we all live with it. on some vehicles it seems to go away once they warm up or at least it's a little more quiet. I have no idea if replace all the head components will make it go away but you'll want to replace all those items (and the pushrods) anyway with the type of cam you looking at.

chech out this link for some cam basics:
