auto tensioner moving/ rattleing?
is the auto tensioner supposed to move like that?
I notice a rattling noise when I'm driving around 50MPH or above.
I removed a alternator because it was rattling ( making noise) really bad and replaced it yesterday. Question: would a bad tensioner cause a alternator to go bad as in make it rattle?
(I know the serpentine belt is bad) http://youtu.be/ccOKQfbRdKo
wow you need to provide more info you're very vague with your description. I think you're talking about the serpentine belt tensioner? I'm not sure of the symptoms other than a belt coming off the pulleys(has happened to me on other vehicles) but yes the tensioners do wear out in time....I would suggest seeing how tight the belt is, if you can push on the belt and move it more than an inch the tensioner may be bad. Again, not really sure how to diagnose the tensioner, but typically from what I remember when I would push on the belts of my other vehicles they would only move about .5" from the force of my arm.
From that video, it sure looks like the entire tensioner assembly is moving. I bet if you pulled the coil off the side of the bracket and tightened that bolt down behind the bracket it would tighten right up. There is a round key on the back of the tensioner that fits into a hole in the bracket. Make sure that is properly lined up and also that it hasn't sheared off.
