Wait for 2012 six speed?

This is my first post here and I do not have a R/T Ram just yet. I do plan on buying one, but need help with the decision. Right now there are some deep discounts going on with the 2011 models, for instance a dealer here in Northern CA has a standard R/T with no other options, going for $24995. That seems to be a smokin deal. Now the dilemma, do I wait for the 2012 model that is supposedly going to have a 6 speed transmission, or spring for one now with the good discounts? Realistically, an engine with this massive amount of torque, would one more speed make that much difference? I currently own a 2006 300 SRT8 with approx. 440 h/p. Love my Mopars...

I am waiting myself, not for the 6 speed, but the 8 speed that will be in them about a full year from now

It won't be a chrysler transmission, it will be a ZF german transmission, made in Chryslers new transmission plants

I think that you should make the very best deal that you can right now
get a HEMI, get a 3.92 rear axle ratio with LSD, don't let them sell you a 3.21 or 3.55

make sure that the radio has all the goodies that you want
they are trying to sell radios that have all the capabilities, but none of them actually do much of anything without serious upgrades & the upgrades cost major $$$$$
Make them show you that the BLUETOOTH WORKS !!
same with the Navigation if that is something that you want

One last thing, if your dealer has an INTERNET/FLEET sales person, deal through them, they don't have to sell you a vehicle off of their lot, they can have one brought in for you from just about any where

if you can swing it, get a class 4 hitch receiver & a electric brake controller, you MAY or may not need it, but it is nice to have
Get a backup camera from Dodge as well as everything else as part of the deal

dual exhaust is always nice to have

The 2012 6 speed is pretty much the current 5 speed with a little different tuning. I would go for the 2011 R/T for $24,995; mine was about $36,000. Also depending what color you want, the black for 2012 is just a plain black; not metallic like for 2011

He wants the R/T which only comes with 4.10

You might want to research the new 6 speed a bit more. All of the ratios are different, it is not a tuning thing. The current 5 speed is a 3.00 1st gear, w/ D (3rd) direct drive. The new 6 speed has a shorter first gear, w/ 4th being direct drive ( or 1-1). 6th is a slightly taller overdrive than the current 5th. Basically, this will make the truck quicker from a stop, and have you cruising at a slightly lower RPM at freeway speeds.

Hi and a warm Carolina welcome to the best RAM ForumZ on the web. I'm all for making a great deal today as I'm looking for the ZF and the next Hemi upgrade in a couple of years. :Hey:

I would buy the 2011, Is the dealership you are talking about Folsom Lake Dodge? I swear all the salesmen there don't know jack about nothing! One guy was trying to tell me that a V6 1500 QC could tow 7500lbs, and the truck was a base model ST and he was claiming that the vinyl seats where leather.

Yup that would be the dealership and your right the salesmen should know more about what their talking about. The salesman I talked to never heard of the "Express" model that's already on some lots.

From what I've read the 8 speed trans does not have the torque capacity for the big motors, will be used on V-6's and 4 bangers

Thanks for the welcome, warm here too :-)

Buy now.. It's a simple choice. There will ALWAYS be something better out next year. The savings now are good. The 8 speed isn't a go on any of the v8's yet. As said above, it's not rated for higher torque.

To me, a 6-10k price savings is a no brainer.. If you don't take that good deal, someone else will.

Moparzrule 07-17-2011 06:38 PM

That's some pretty good logic - right there!!

chrismeyers2k1 07-17-2011 09:12 PM

Hell I'd wait for the 2012 for the PX8 Black ALONE, not even mentioning the 6 speed. No offense to Brilliant Black, but PX8 for 2012 is a REAL black, pure pitch black, the way blacks should be. No flecks that make it look dirty. My 2012 is being built on Monday and I should have it in 2 weeks, and mine's the PX8 Black. Glad I waited and ordered.
