Well, the best way is to carefully select the tip and understand what material is used. Most tips you see are chromed carbon steel. And the chrome isn't a nice triple chrome material, either. So expect road grime to discolor it and to chip it, promoting rust.

I have a set of brushed aluminum tips and they come clean every time...because aluminum won't rust. They clean right up and a little 3M ScotchBrite pad work now and then keeps them looking good.

You could try some rattle can clear coat to protect the tips. Not really sure how well it would work.

id make sure that there is a little hole on the bottom side of the tips it lets the water drain out of the tip also make sure you keep it clean other then that i dont know anything else

Wash them off every day and dry them :) Or there is the under bed dump!

You could soak them with wd40 or similar, to coat them with oil, then wipe off, this will let it work its way into the entire tip and will help prevent rust. I had a bumper rusting on my first car, asked my dad how to prevent it, and he said "hold on" then went inside and came right back out with a jar of vaseline, he coated the whole bumper with vaseline, then wiped it off with a rag, never had more rust after that lol. old school.
