witch is worth it $$ wise a 390 or 408 stroker
ok well after realizing that i need more HP to my tires for rock crawling and for eating imports that like to bomb by me with there fart cans i have decided to rebuild my 318 BUT im trying to see what is worth it more rebuild the 318 into a 390 stroker or get myself a 360 and build it up like i want to for my 318. was told by a few machine/engine shops that building the 318 into a 390 stroker is a WASTE of time and money for what i want to do with my truck (wheeling/daily driver/drag strip/with occasional towing) and that building the 360 into a 408 is a better bang for my $$ ... I kinda trust what is said on here vs. what guys are saying at the shops.

Im also trying to find find all this in canada or do i have to order this over the boarder ( stupid customs greedy hands)

I have gotten the same advice on building a 318. I talked to several well-respected engine builders and they all suggested I get a 360 Magnum engine and build that into a 408 stroker.

After looking at some dyno results of both engines and hearing back from a few folks that did build their 318's and wished they hadn't, I had the info I needed to make a decision.

So I would agree...don't waste your time money on the 5.2L.

Not exactly the same, but im more into the GM Ls engines. If you go and stroke a stock 5.7l you get a 383, but take a 6.0l, stroke it and clean up bore you get a 408....lots of people say the same thing too. I built and dropped a high compression big cam 408 in my 04 GTO and am happy as hell with it!

Now i can even beat crotch rockets, so i say go 408!

ok guess i'm going to start looking for a 2001 360 in the bone yard that hasn't been cooked ... no do I want a low mile 360 or a high mileage one and witch head's do I want ?

mark21742 07-29-2011 08:07 PM

Personally, when I swapped out my dads 318 in his 98 the 2001 360 i dropped on had the exact same heads. I picked up the motor, wiring, and computer for $450 with 110,000 miles on it.

The big thing to look for is cracks between the valves in any magnum head.

since I am going this route of building a 360 into a 408 im going to have the block and heads gone over with a fine tooth comb i am thinking of the cast iron Magnum r/t heads with 2.02 valves now the main thing i want to do is little code throwing none would be perfect nither is the PCM tuning ... thats the part that sometimes stumps me

White Lightening 07-29-2011 09:20 PM

im actually trying to find 408 strokers in a crate motor form ??? lol since its summer i drive my lowrider 50% of the time and have a 2 year old to chase so building motors i dont have time for anymore unlike what i did to my impala since i bought it 10 years ago

Yeah my daughter has always come with me wheeling (even before she was born) but im gettin tired of boggin in mud so were rock crawling now ... everytime shes grumpy i head out towards the trails she almost instantly realizes and starts giggling away ... and when im in my shop she always wants to help me or see what im doing ... guess she can help me build my 408 stroker unless i find a crate engine 408 and i send in my 318 as core

as far as heads go you might wanna check into the hughes engines Iron Ram Magnum heads, they are supposed to be cheaper and better than the r/t heads. Hughes has really good customer service so if you have any questions just shoot em a call lol
