I think yer on the right track. Keep the grit very fine and just keep working it.

Are they clear coated or bare aluminum? I had a set of bare aluminums that were in poor shape, but when done they looked chrome! We started with 500 grit, then 1200, then 2000. Keep it well moistened. After that we polished with a wheel on a die grinder, and finally hand polished. It took approximately 2-3 hours per wheel, but the results were sweet! Note: if your wheels are clear coated they need to be stripped and smoothed out first!

If it isn't to bad you might be better off just scrubbing them with something like never dull and then hut it with mothers polish.
