Painting dash componants

I'm wanting to paint the silver parts of my dash to match the exterior color. I don't think the main sections in the console will be to bad but how do I get to the silver rings around the vents? Do they come out with the vents or seperately, and how do the vents come out? Thanks.

They come out with the vents in them. Once the whole piece is out you can unsnap the vents from the silver border (ring).

Easy, I had mine out to try and paint it... yeah didn't turn out well. So just took the paint off put her back in and ordered a dash kit!

Just wet sand it and REMBER use adhesion promoter and apply the color you choose i used duple color exact match did 3 coats let dry then did 5 coats of clear i even painted the vents the area around the shifter i painted that and used a dash kit for the shifter base did the piece around the steering wheel and the ones in the steering wheel.

Ok to get it out theres 2 screws in the top try (one that says dodge ) under the rubber and the other 2 screws are in the bottom storage area under the rubber then it all just pops out.

How about the vents next to the doors? What's the best way to get them out?

just put you finger in the vent and a little pull and she's out.

dodgert, looks nice. i painted mine as well. but i didnt paint the vents and the middle of the center consel. i didnt know if it would look good or not. but i like it. i didnt go with the color of my truck. i went with a darker gray with some silver pecks. i really hated that light gray.

but i have to redo it because i did something wrong. it started to bubble up and today i sanded it back down and im going to repaint it.

do you have any idea why that might have happened, so i wont repeat it and have to sand it down again.

why did you wet sand it?

Thats just me old school i wet sand everything lol did you use the adhesion promoter and if so u only have to wait like less then 10 mins to paint on top of that.

Skillets 09-02-2011 11:22 PM

i dont know what adhesion promoter is. lol could be why it bubbled.

but what i used was paint that sticks to plastic, i thought

dodgert 09-03-2011 12:28 AM

Well as u read above i said use adhesion promoter you have to use it other wise the paint won't stick and you'll get the---bubbles they carry it at any automotive store, something about the dash no matter what paint you use u have to use the promoter.

I painted the chrome trim around the console shifter as it can be blinding when sun hit it just right. I used the black plastic dip spray and it turned out better than I imagined. Got it at the Home Depot for like $6. Here is a pic of the finished product.
