Towing in 4th gear

Our truck has 3:55 gears. Hate them. When we tow our boat, even locked in tow, it shifts alot, I think. Will it hurt the tranny if I lock it in forth? We live in the hills, not mountains, just steep hills, and it drives me nuts to have it shift all the time. Thanks for the help. Doug

If it feels like it's hunting for gears a lot that is hard on the transmission, should try to keep it from hunting.

I don't tow, but i do travel at speeds much lower than most drivers, most times i have to travel at the same speed as the semi truck that i am paid to follow or lead

at certain speeds the computer is telling the transmission to shift up & as soon as it does, all the information is immediately changed & it tells the transmission to shift back down.
I manually select a gear that keeps it from cycling like that.
The only thing is that i sometimes forget to shift back into high gear when the road has leveled out more

I understand your frustration. My 2010 had 3:55 gears. My 2011 has 3:92s. I allways pull my 4500 lb boat in 4th gear. If I had to pull the boat in 5th gear, the Ram would have to go. Way too much shifting!

Definitely use 4th. It will be a lot better for your trans to have it stay in a gear, rather then shifting all the time, and with 3.55 gears, your engine RPMs are well within a good torque range without reving to high.

Drop it to 4th, and enjoy the trip. :)

Thanks everyone. I have a 010 truck, and really like it, except for the gears. I just put too much faith in my salesman. Thanks Doug

I have the 3:55's as well towing our 6000 lbs travel trailer. Yes it is not ideal, I thought they would be better, but I should have gone with 3:92, took what was on the lot at the time cause I did want to wait :shy:

I usually put it in Tow mode and lock into 4th when I am not on the interstate. At higher speeds (by that I mean no more than 65 mph) I put it in tow mode and leave it in 5th, in hopes I can save some mileage! Then ensure I change the transmission fluid and filter yearly and hope it last the 7 or so years I plan to keep it :thk:

Just so you know, when in tow mode, "5th" as displayed on the evic is actually "4th". The trans rearranges gears when in tow mode:

Regular:
1st 3.00:1
2nd 1.67:1
2nd Prime 1.50:1 (used for downshifting only)
3rd 1.00:1
4th 0.75:1
5th 0.67:1

Tow/haul mode:
1st 3.00:1
2nd 1.67:1
3rd 1.50:1
4th 1.00:1
5th 0.75:1

Both 4th and 5th (regular) are overdrive gears. To technically lock it out of overdrive when towing you would not only have to put it in tow/haul mode (this locks out 5th), but you would also have to press the +/- button down to read "4" so it is in the 1:1 gear. If the trans is not hunting for gears there's no need to lock it out.

Yep..When it comes to buying trucks.....you need to know more than the salespeople. I too made the same mistake on the 2010. I bitched and bitched untill the dealer gave me a good deal on a 2011.
