V6 Towing Advice Needed
Guys, I have the 3.7L with a 5 speed manual. I think I saw the tow rating to be in the 3,500lb range. I have a Miata I would like to tow to the track maybe twice a year but I don't want to spend the big bucks for an aluminum trailer. Can anyone tell me what's the limiting factor for my truck? Is it the clutch, transmisson or engine (or all the above)? Can't be brakes ;-) Thanks!

Engine power + frame strength + hitch rating + suspension capability + rear axle strength + rear axle ratio (for the most part).

After owning this thing for about 3 weeks now I would say its the engine (assuming the clutch would hold). Its just really down on power so a heavy trailer would likely bring this thing to a crawl ;-( Brakes, suspension, and tranny are likely ok. Lucky I bought it mainly to do lite household work and for my son to drive. He would be too tempted to burn-rubber with a Hemi ;-) This thing won't get out of its own way.

The manual trans should hold up fine and like you said the overall truck, suspension, brakes, etc. are identical to the v8 trucks so that will be fine. The lack of torque from the v6 and the clutch will be the limiting factors. Towing with a manual paired to an engine that has very little low end torque makes clutches go FAST. I used to have an s10 with a 4 cylinder and manual, and I would refuse to be limited by those two things lol. I once replaced the clutch, and within months it was glazed from me constantly hauling up to double the payload it is rated for. It was still fine for years during regular driving, but anytime after that that I put a load on it it would get hot fast and would chatter and jerk pretty bad. Not much you can do about that though other than avoid stopping and starting a lot while loaded...or replace the clutch often haha

Thanks for the info man, I totally agree. If I can find a trailer that's light weight I should be ok. Not going to tow very often, if I have to do a clutch I guess that's the painful price I will have to pay.

The good thing is a clutch is relatively inexpensive, and relatively easy to change, so it's a decent "wear" item. After doing it the first time on my s10, spending the whole day, the second time I did it probably only took about 3 hours at most.

What gear ratio do you have? The thing with the 3.7 (besides distinct lack of displacement) is that it's powerband is further up. 3.92's (if you don't have them already) to 4.56's will help ALOT towards getting things moving.

Yeah, it moves pretty well once you rev it. I always let her warm-up first, then she can be pushed to 4-5K.

^wow that's pretty light 4 cylinder s10 could tow about the's strange though that the gearing doesn't matter in what's posted above...I think something's wrong there?
