98 360 Build ?'s

Hey guys, as you can see in my info, i got a 98 1500 sport with a 318 in it. Its got about 155k miles on it, and from what i found doing the first oil change after i bought it, it had a hard life before i owned it. Well needless to say its showing its age burning oil and all. So I was tossing ideas around and decided to do a 360 swap. But Im not gonna go pick up a junkyard motor and throw it in, just to run into this issue another year or two down the road. So im planning on doing a rebuild. I've been shopping around for parts, and unlike the ford motor i built a couple years ago, i cant find parts anywhere for this engine. So here are some questions.

Im thinking about boring this motor, how far can I go before running into computer/programming issues on the stock ecm?

How much of a cam can I go before computer/programming issues?

What is the reccomended intake?

Where can I find a master rebuild kit (gaskets, bearings, freee plugs and such; i've checked summit, jegs, and couple of local parts stores but cant find any gasket kits at all)?

Does anyone have a list of Tourque Spec's?

This thread is just a Q/A thread, i wont be starting this project till atleast February.

These guys can help with rebuild kits:

Best intake? I like the Edelbrock/Hughes RPM Air Gap MPI. Overboring adds very little to displacement. It's not gonna be a computer problem. Now, stroker kits add considerably more to displacement and require more attention in the computer setup. The stock computer can handle a nice cam upgrade. Keep lobe seperation to 112-114 degrees with lift not exceeding .480 inches. Duration at .050" should be fairly tight, say not more than 214 degrees. A call to a cam rep can help. Also, some offer an online cam selector to assist you. I like the Competition Cams brand.

So now I have the engine here at the house and have pulled the manifolds and gettin ready to go out to tear the heads down and what not. What tuner is everyone using? I know i've read alot about people doing this swap and then getting a tune done to change the fuel curves. What are ya'll using?

SCT is a good choice for custom tunes.

you should be able to find pretty much all you'll need here.

The good news about the engine I got is that it only has 80k miles on it, so im not gonna be having the block machined or tough the rotating assembly unless i find something wrong with it. How do i get ahold of SCT for doing a custom tune? I was on there website and can't find anything

What's everyone running for ignition systems? I was planning on MSD but after looking around MD there are a helluva lotta choices to go with. Anyone wanna way in on this?

Brutus 01-24-2012 07:29 PM

a standard Mallory or MSD 6A or 6AL will do just fine. but your stock ignition can handle quite a bit before you need to upgrade it. I'd spend your money elsewhere until it's time for an ignition upgrade.
