Even if you replaced the battery, your ignition system could be on the fritz. Check your starter first.

This exact same thing happened to my 01. It turned out to be a cylinder misfire. I'd recommend checking all your SP wires as well...

The smell of gas turned out simply to be some power steering fluid that had spilled on the floor...and the perception of bad gas mileage was just me getting used to...
