Take your 2001 intake off, replace the plenum gasket while it's off. Use this intake on the replacement engine. Use your 2001 sensors and other parts. That's all there is to it.

Fluid, filter and basic band adjustment is a lot cheaper than a rebuild. Might make the difference, might not, but the least costly and least effort. Don't do it, and it's dead for sure.

Also probably over-due for a new O2 sensor. A throttle body that old would also do well to get a rebuild kit. Just a couple gaskets, but the vacuum leak mentioned could easily be from there.
