The airbags help you handle the payload better, but it doesn't increase the payload. Now if your bed is overloaded it will probably handle better with airbags than without but it's still overloaded.

I don't use a compressor; I have a portable in the bed as part of a jump box I already carry. When I installed the bags I thought I would eventually add the compressor. After living with them for a few months I didn't find myself inflating and deflating often enough to warrant an onboard compressor.
