To keep my wheels like new, I spray them with wheel/tire cleaner Mother's of other, let it sit for a few minutes then go thru the car wash.
I then spray the tire and wheel with a Tire Shine, Meguiars Endurance is good, then wipe the wheel only with a dry rag. Get any left over dirt or brake dust.
It also prevents brake dust from sticking.
Have not had any trouble with it getting on the rotors or pads. I try to avoid it but some does got on and hasn't been a problem.
