I know exactly what your talking about. I asked the tech a mcgaughy's why the spring was like that.He said it's a progressive spring- softer at the top stiffer at the bottom. I asked how the top worked when the top 4 coils sit on each other. He didn't know!!!
The springs are designed that way so that when the suspension decompresses the tighter-wound coils expand open and softly transition the suspension through the compression phase of the suspension cycle, hence the term "progressive-rate". Just helps soften the ride some, unless you cut them off, lol!
