I had never heard of axle wrap prior to this thread. Did a little reading and it looks to be the most common on HD, 2500, or lifted trucks. Regardless, other than the appearance of the spring packs, will it hurt anything to run them this way? New spring packs are expensive!!
It's a very common problem on trucks that are lifted w/ blocks. By spacing the axle away from the spring pack it compounds the rotational torque on the springs greatly. Every time you accelerate, the axle housing is trying to rotate, and the only thing stopping this is the springs, so any increase in leverage/applied torque will create more stress on the springs. Apply enough leverage/torque over time and, voila! S-shaped springs.
As far as them being safe to use, you could bend spring steel enough to cause a stress fracture, but I don't think you're there. I've seen much worse.
