Default Tachometer reading and power loss.

Here's what's happening to my 1999 Ram 2500 Cummins Deisel.

At first the engine light came on but this was intermittent. After a week the tachometer would drop to zero but the engine kept running. There was also a considerable amount of power loss. The tachometer and power loss problems are also intermittent but they are bad a lot more often then they are good. Sometimes when I stop at a light it feels like the engine wants to stall but so far the engine has not actually quit.

These are ALL of the symptoms so far. I've read other posts that point to a crank sensor or a cam sensor. Any opinions?
