Depends on what you're looking for. Low rpm power or power up top. The pre-fuel injection 318's had crap plastic-toothed timing gear, so if it hasn't been changed in a while, do it and use a steel unit. The cam is so mild in these engines, every little bit helps. Naturally, addressing choke points is essential. Even a big single exhaust will help. I'd pull the stock exhaust manifolds off, plug the air injection ports, install headers and dials ghat angle out in front of the rear wheels. An Edelbrock Performer and a small 4v carb will work wonders. Naturally, emissions issues can factor in, but to see how much can be done without really trying, read this:
