Default Transmission problem?

Hola,

I just bought my Ram, an '02 SLT Quad Cab 4x4 with the 5.9L Magnum. It has a 190,000 miles on it so I expect some issues and am working with my regular shop to get to them however.... I need to prioritize and I need to know what to do about this issue that just showed up.

Hot or cold when I am starting from a dead stop it feels like the transmission has to slap/slam into gear. Not hard mind you but you can feel it, like the engine was in neutral, you revved up the engine then dropped it into first.

I haven't done anything with this yet as far as trying to diagnose the problem but I am going to first try and do a short drive, park it level and then check the fluid level and color.

I guess my questions are: 1-Is there anything else I can do to trouble shoot this and 2-what might be causing it/the source of the problem?

Thanks all,
Hud
