I doubt that is true. The compressor is controlled by temperature and pressure sensors via computer control. Now it could be a bad control module, but doubt it. Get everything evacuated, and recharged. It its still not working properly then a component (such as a orifice tube) may be bad.

Honestly, unless you totally understand how the system works, it should be taken to a professional and properly diagnosed. $500 in diagnostic,parts and labor is way cheaper than destroying a $4,000 a/c system
