The EPS system utilizes three primary inputs, which include steering wheel torque, steering wheel position, and vehicle speed. Steering wheel torque is determined through use of a torsion bar and torque sensor.
The torque sensor monitors driver input and is used by the ECU to provide appropriate system response. Steering wheel position is monitored by a relative position sensor (RPS), which monitors angle.
The third input, vehicle speed, is also monitored by the EPS system. At lower speeds, more torque is required, and when the vehicle is traveling at higher speeds, less torque is required.
The ECM processes these inputs to determine the magnitude and direction of the steering assist feature on the EPS system (Fig. 30).
