We should count ourselves lucky. Some cars require removing components [skid plates with Torx bolts] just to access the engine oil filter and some will have your hand/arms looking like you just walked out of a bar brawl. Read: 1999 Honda Civic, 1985 Honda Accord and 1998 Toyota Supra come to immediate mind.
The top mounted engine oil filter is a common Subaru thing of late and older BMW's did it too, but I have NFC why.... ? I'm sure there are others.
Must be a ground clearance issue or maybe just an ease of access thing.... dunno'.
Personally - and as long as they're not a major PITA and you don't need the arm/hand width of a 5YR old - I'm a fan of bottom mounted oil filters for the most part. You're killing two birds with a single stone while changing your oil too whilst under there. I also like the pre-fill feature of bottom mounted oil filters with a top-facing mouth. Trying doing that with a top mounted oil filter with a bottom-facing mouth.
Not gonna' be pretty....
