Google "Cylinder Deactivation" and you will find that reducing pumping parasitic losses is one of the big efficiency improvements gained by deactivating cylinders. No confusion on my part, just a well known fact in the area of increasing engine BSFC. New diesels are taking mileage hits why, because most of them use cooled EGR that is introduced into the engine with the help of a ......Throttle. After treatment is also consuming more fuel with some of these new diesels.
