Default Polishing Chrome Bumpers

While detailing my truck, I decided to clean up the front bumper. I am not at all impressed with the quality of the chrome, as there are more defects than not. However, I diccovered an area by the license plate that I must have scratched (tar / grit in the cloth) and used a chrome polish to go over it by hand (thumb). After I polished it (again, by hand and with a very soft piece of foam) I noticed a slight burnished appearance when I held a flouresent light up to it. I almost freaked out. I went over it with Meguires ultimate polish (awesome product) and it took most of it out. Upon very close inspection there is a slight difference in appearance though (nobody would ever notice it but me). Could it be that the plating is so thin, that even polishing lightly by hand could rub through the chrome? If that is the case, I cant imagine what it will look like in a few years. Any imput on the chrome on these trucks?
