I had a mechanic at a dealerhsip tell me that you can short stuff out if you flood the alternator (enough water to bridge the copper coil with other parts in the generator) but you have to almost submerge it to make that happen. Basicly he said it won't hurt it get it wet, but don't blast it with the hose on high power. Just a gentle spray to clean it off. That probably goes for everything in there. Just don't get carried away with the hose.
