They eventually wear out and lose their damping ability as the valves wear out or the seals break down.

After 39K miles with factory shocks and springs and then 2-3 with months with 35s and factory shocks mine were toast.

Bilstein's 5100 model is the preference of most of the guys here because it allows you to have a heavy duty off road oriented shock while also saving you money so you don't have to purchase a leveling kit so you kill two birds with one stone. Bilstein is seen a premium shock in the marketplace which is one of the reasons that GM was able to build the Z71 Off Road package into such a huge force in the truck market....and then it became stickers only, but it appears that for '14 they are using Ranchos. FWIW
