a shift kit makes the trans shift harder, quicker, and make the tranny last longer.

Because, whenever you have a car that shifts smoothly, its actually the tranny slipping. However, the factory builds them to purposley do that because not everyone wants to chirp the tires at every shift.

But, you can buy shift kits in different stages, because, some are very very hard shifting and will chirp the tires just shifting into reverse.
