Default Ball joints on a 2wd

I'm currently trying to remove the old ball joints on my truck, and I'm having quite a few issues.
I have a 2000 Ram 1500 Sport, 2wd.
The quote we got from the shop was outrageous, so we decided to do the ball joints ourselves.
We've gotten to them fine, but we can't get the rivets out.
We ended up completely grinding off the heads of the rivets, and hit them with some of the biggest hammers you've ever seen, but no luck.
We're drilling holes through the middle of the rivets, hoping that will help persuading them to come out.
Anyone know anything we missed, or what we're doing wrong?
