your X pipe or H pipe is suppose to go at the HOTTEST point in the exhaust
that is close to the transmissions bell housing usually, some company makes something that is heat sensitive tape, if you wanted the exact spot, but, on one of my trucks i wanted to be able to drop the transmission without dropping the header pipes, so moved the H crossover closer to the engine & made a slip over connector just behind it, that way i could change transmissions almost as fast as if there were no exhaust around it, by the way, they were Muncie & Saginaw 4 speed sticks
