Default Durango wheels on a 2002 1500

I saw a truck tonight and the owner was sitting on his porch so I stopped and introduced myself and asked if I could ask some questions about his truck. He said he was running a 3" body lift and no level. It looked pretty good. I noticed his wheels looked like the TRX4 wheels on my truck and he said they were OE to the truck. I looked them up and they are 2004-2007 Durango wheels. Here's the thing. He had no spacers and was running 35/12.50/17s with no rubbing issues. I've read that the TRX4 wheels with 315s or 35s will rub if you don't use spacers. I thought that the lack of a level kit might keep the width of the track slightly wider. Any thoughts?
