I just did a bedside replacement last summer. It the panel was around $600 but the total bill with labour & material came to $2500. If you're looking to do things yourself I'd just do what everyone else is saying and buy a used box and a used door. Buy a cheap pot gun, fill the dents and dings on your truck and have at it. Then you would probably have a body job that is closer to manageable for your 1st project and still save a bit of money. My opinion is that you'd be better off to just put the box and door on, then take it to a body shop to have prepped and sprayed, for what it will cost vs the value loss to your truck when people notice paint sags, cracking fill and runs in the paint, because after all there is no difference in experience between you and those kids at the shop that you refer to as parts changers. But, I'm pretty sure you're not interested in going that route.
