basically there are i believe 2 places on the transmission with plugs depending in the transmission. you can take the plugs out and adjust the bands inside the transmission. incase you dont know how an automatic works, there are bands inside the transmission that act as gears in a manual transmission. when the transmission shifts it switches from one set of bands and drum to another. the soft shift you feel when an automatic shifts partially is the bands slipping by design just as you gently let the clutch out on a manual transmission and as the transmission ages and the bands shift more and more the friction material on the bands wears down and eventually they wear down to the point that they cant clamp completely on the drum. when this happens the bands can be tightened up giving the transmission more life before needing replaced. however this is something best done by a trained mechanic or after doing your homework and learning how to properly adjust them yourself. there may also be maintenance schedules for when the bands need tightened but i dont know that for sure.
