i don't think you over reacted at all..
when you drop near a G on something as "basic" as a rear cover you should expect near perfection.....like you i don't mind pissing around with stuff to adapt, but honestly after dropping almost $1000 i don't see why i'd have to especially, as you note, with a product from an oem builder
