Default Ram 2500 4x4 Problems

1998 Ram 4x4 Cummins
Will not engage the 4 wheel drive. Vacuum at vacuum shift motor correct. Removed CAD mechanism. Cleaned the shift fork and did not see any apparant binding or damage. The shift motor shaft appears to move correctly when vacuum is applied. It appears that the passenger side drive axle is out of align with the intermediate drive shaft. Using a small pry bar, I raised the passenger side shaft and slide the shift collar over the intermediate shaft. 4x4 then was engaged and all 4 wheels spin.
There appears to be a nose on the inner axle shaft which fits into the end of the outer axle shaft. But when the collar is slide back the 2 shafts do not stay align. The problem I am sure is that the 2 shafts are not staying in alignment. What keeps them aligned? Thanks for any help...
