Well there's really two issues with the gear swap and the auto trans. First of all, you want to stay out of overdrive at the track because you don't want to be running wide open throttle in overdrive, it puts alot of stress on the trans. The other thing is highway cruising rpm. the taller the gear, the higher the rpm (and possibly worse mpg). For my setup, going with 4.56" only puts me at roughly 2200rpm if I remember correctly, that's not that bad, right now with 3.55" I'm at like 1,600 I think (this is all at 70mph). As for the 6 speed manual trans, I'm not sure what the ratios are, and not sure if it has the same issues with running wide open in the overdrive gears.
