First, go to a dealer and test drive the backup camera. That will give you a standard to compare yours against.

Next time you have the console open, remove the camera from the truck, hook it up with a short video cable and point it out the side. If the video quality is acceptable, then you might want to try a high quality (read $) cable. Test the cable before routing it on the truck.

Years ago I used a video amp at work for a long cable run. I don't know what's available but it might be an option.
